Hey folks,
JSMS 4.2.0 is available for download now. If you already have JSMS, then simply enable the “Automatic Update” option in the Preferences and select the “Check for Updates” option from the Help menu.
This release brings lots of cool new features, including the ability to run JSMS in the system tray, cancel a message while it is being sent, enhanced message history and many more changes. Plus any issues people have experienced running through HTTP proxies should also be resolved. Check the “Change Log” from the Help menu for a full list of changes.
Thanks for using JSMS, and please spread the word around to your friends.
Happy texting!
Hey Guys!
First of all, thanks for the great app!
But making the tray behavior mandatory in the 4.2.0 update is a bit annoying. Are you planning a switch in the preferences pane to configure that ‘feature’?
I’ll patch it in the meanwhile
Thanks for making it OSS!
Keep up the good work! Regards,
sr
We hadn’t really thought of making it optional to be honest. But I don’t see why that would be a problem. I’ll try to take a look at it as soon as I get a chance and I’ll make a beta release available to you (it’ll possible take me a few days though, as I have other commitments over the next few days.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestion.
Keith.
Hi Keith!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Yea, for the most, it is of course no problem, it’s just my app design/usability view. Cause when I close an app, then it should close, if there are other options, fair enough, it should be configurable.
I might me a very special case
but I want to explain my use case to you.
I close the app after usage cause Java occupies well a fair amount space in my memory.
When I am working on the PC I try to optimize everything, after all a computer is a tool
Yes I can close it with the shortcut, CRTL-I but as I work mostly with the keyboard and my left hand stays constantly on the KB, if I need the trackball my right hand reaches for it. So if I wanna close the app I usually press ALT-F4 which I can do with just my left hand. But now the app stays in memory and I would have to stretch my left hand to the I which is rather uncomfortable
And I start the app over the keyboard so being in the tray is not any usage to me also, besides the memory usage.
So I rather take the wee minutes to patch the app instead of stretching my fingers *g*
Just my usability point of view.
And no worries, it’s just an suggestion, may the source be with you!
Regards,
sr
Well I certainly can’t argue with that!
Hey sr,
I’ve just made a beta release build of JSMS where it is now optional to dock JSMS in the System Tray. Send me an email to jsmsirl@gmail.com and we’ll mail you back with a URL where you can download the beta from.
Keith.
Just also to note for current users:
With the current version, you can completely exit JSMS by using the ‘File’ -> ‘Exit’ menu instead of the ‘X’ close button.

Finding 4.2.0 flaky on Java 6 Update 13 on both XP x86 and Vista x64. The window below the File menu usually stays blank and the app is unpresonsive to any sort of clicks. Killing it doesn’t help, tho a reboot sometimes fixes it.
Have gone back to 4.1.5 which is working perfectly.
Oh, and I 2nd the motion that close means close!
Hi Shane, can you send on a log. It’s working fine for me on all Windows platforms (XP, Windows 7 with JVM 6 update 13). Instructions on logging here http://jsmsirl.sourceforge.net/JSMS/FAQ.html
We have added the system tray disable pref so in the next release you can disable it.
Cheers

Long time user, first time caller..
I’ve been using 4.2.0 on OSX Leopard since it came out with no problems; updated the Java preferences as instructed and everything was great…
…until I got the latest Java update via Software Update the other day: Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4
Now JSMS won’t open at all.. Any ideas?
Java Preferences still has Java SE6 up top on both lists..
Big fan of the app.. Gutted that I haven’t been able to use it for the past few days..
Thanks,
Dan.
Hi Dan,
Yes there is an issue here. I will try and fix it at the weekend. In the meantime, you can still run it from the Terminal application by typing:
cd /Applications/JSMS
then to run type:
java -jar JSMS.app/Contents/Resources/Java/JSMS.jar
Cheers,
Finbarr
Hey Finbarr,
Thanks for the Terminal workaround. I really appreciate the quick reply!
I’ll look forward to the next update..
Dan.
