JSMS 4.2.0 Released!

Hey folks,

JSMS 4.2.0 is available for download now. If you already have JSMS, then simply enable the “Automatic Update” option in the Preferences and select the “Check for Updates” option from the Help menu.

This release brings lots of cool new features, including the ability to run JSMS in the system tray, cancel a message while it is being sent, enhanced message history and many more changes. Plus any issues people have experienced running through HTTP proxies should also be resolved. Check the “Change Log” from the Help menu for a full list of changes.

Thanks for using JSMS, and please spread the word around to your friends.

Happy texting!

The move away from PowerPC

[Note: This post affects Apple Power Mac users only]

We will probably release a version of JSMS in the future for Apple Power PC (non Intel) users where will will force the automatic update preference to be False, therefore it will not update itself when subsequent (Intel only) releases come out.

JSMS will then continue to work on PowerPC Macs until the operator you use changes their website and breaks JSMS. This could mean it works for you for weeks or years depending on your operator.

This also means that you won’t get any of the new features which we will be including in the Intel builds.

It is unfortunate that we must do this, but the version of Java on older Macs has been holding us back for some time. We didn’t take this decision lightly (I own a Powerbook G4 myself!).

It may be a few months until we drop support for Power Macs. In our poll, 76% of users said they are now moved over to Intel based Macs so I guess this means that we shouldn’t disrupt too many users by doing this.

JSMS 4.1.1 has been released

Yesterday we released an update to JSMS to work again for O2 users. Today we have been working a bit more…

As there are a lot of new users coming to JSMS, having our contact import feature working properly is a priority. This is why we have updated JSMS to handle the downloading of all your O2 contacts from the ‘Address Book’ part of their new site.

We have released another update which will now be able to import all your contacts saving you loads of time typing them in! Just:

  • update JSMS (Help -> Check For Updates…)
  • install the update and restart JSMS
  • Go into your phonebook
  • Click the ‘Import’ button and follow the import wizard steps

Enjoy!

JSMS is down for O2 users for the next couple of days

Update 11 Nov:

JSMS 4.0.9 has been released and fixes the O2 issues.

O2 have said on their website that they will be up grading their webtext facility today and tomorrow. This change will more than likely break JSMS. We will update our code asap and release a fix which all users above version 4.0.7 should get auto-magically if you have auto-update enabled in your JSMS preferences.

If you are running a version older than 4.0.7 you will need to manually download and install JSMS again (don’t worry all your contacts / prefs will be saved) as the automatic update was broken in these earlier versions.

6,000 Downloads of JSMS and Counting

Since I started hosting JSMS on sourceforge in May 2007, it has gone through some big changes.

Many new features have been added. When I went traveling, Keith took on the task of keeping the project going. However not only was the project kept going, but he actually added great value to JSMS. For example Keith removed our dependancy on any third party servers to do message sending for O2 and Vodafone (Meteor did not depend on any other servers from the beginning).

Lots of other features were added and people took notice – this is when our download rate began to increase.

Probably my favourite feature is JSMS ability to auto update itself. This ensures that when an operator changes the workings of their site, we update JSMS to fix any issues the changes might have caused, and release an update which is automatically installed for each user. This minimizes our support requests and keeps all users happy.

To date, over 6,000 copies of JSMS have been downloaded.
